ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Behind a strong performance by a quartet of first-year players, Elizabethtown College defeated previously-unbeaten Lebanon Valley College 5-4 in a Commonwealth Conference women's tennis showdown on Tuesday afternoon.
In a match that lasted 3 hours, 35 minutes, the Blue Jays (5-0 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) avenged a 5-2 loss to the Dutchmen (12-1 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth) in last year's conference championship match, and assured themselves the top seed in next spring's conference tournament.
Elizabethtown opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests, as
Allison Burkhardt and
Madison Pipkin teamed for an 8-2 win over Tamera Lobb and Lauren Fulmer at flight two, and
Alena Marani and
Kristi Noecker posted an 8-1 victory over Caitlin Bedford and Morgan Brady at flight three.
The teams split six singles matches, with Burkhardt defeating Lobb 6-2, 6-4 at flight three, Marani downing Bedford 6-3, 6-0 at flight six, and Noecker shutting out Brady 6-0, 6-0 at flight six. Two of the Dutchmen's three victories in singles came via 10-point tiebreakers after the Blue Jays had already clinched the win.
