ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Seventh-ranked Lebanon Valley College scored three goals in a span of 2 1/2 minutes in the first half and defeated Elizabethtown College 5-2 in a Commonwealth Conference field hockey match on Tuesday afternoon.
Jocelyn Novak and Caitlin Vasey each scored a pair of goals for the Dutchmen (15-2 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth), while Allison Bicher had a goal and two assists and Shelly Lobach recorded two assists in the victory.
Liz DeMatteis and
Julie Foster scored goals for the Blue Jays (11-6 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth), who trailed 3-0 after 16 minutes in their regular-season finale. Elizabethtown, which had already clinched a conference playoff berth, will be on the road for a conference semifinal match next Wednesday.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring at 12:49 as Vasey tipped home a pass from Bicher for her ninth goal of the season. Just 23 seconds later, Novak broke behind the defense after a restart by Vasey and fired home her 22nd goal of the year. Two minutes later, at 15:15, Novak tipped home a shot by Lobach to extend the Dutchmen lead to 3-0.
DeMatteis put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard at 22:51 when she tipped home a cross by
Meg Cassels for her seventh goal of the season, sending the teams to intermission with Lebanon Valley holding a 3-1 lead.
The Dutchmen restored their three-goal lead at 4-1 when Bicher tipped home a shot by Lobach for her 11th goal of the season at 42:26. Foster trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with her second goal of the season at 50:18, but Vasey capped off the scoring with 1:23 to go as she redirected a cross by Bicher for her 10th goal of the year.
Lebanon Valley controlled the stat sheet in the contest, finishing with a 26-7 advantage in shots and a 14-3 edge in penalty corners over Elizabethtown.
Liz Hannegan finished with 12 saves in goal for the Blue Jays, and Caitlin Baro made three stops for the Dutchmen.
