ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. ---
Taylor Helsel scored with 6:08 left in the second half to boost Elizabethtown College to a 1-0 victory over Widener University in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at a sloppy Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday night.
Helsel's goal, his eighth of the season, was assisted by
Javeim Blanchette and clinched a conference playoff berth for the Blue Jays (14-2-1 overall, 4-1-1 Commonwealth). It is the third time in the last six games that Helsel scored the decisive goal in an Elizabethtown victory and his fourth game-winner of the season.
Elizabethtown handled the flow of play for most of the contest against Widener (5-8-3 overall, 2-3-1 Commonwealth), finishing with a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. All 10 Blue Jay starting field players had at least one shot in the match, which was played in soggy conditions that affected footing for both teams.
Eric Carr made five saves in goal for the Blue Jays to earn his third shutout of the season, while Hamed Correa finished with six saves for the Pride.
