BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's cross country team finished fifth at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship, held at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus on Saturday afternoon.
Blue Jay sophomore
Eric Reichert finished fourth overall with a time of 25:12.9 to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships next Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Evan DeArmitt took 23rd place with a time of 25:54.8 to join Reichert as an All-Region selection. The efforts of Reichert and DeArmitt are the 33rd and 34th All-Region performances by Elizabethtown College men's cross country runners since 1999.
Reichert is the seventh Elizabethtown runner to earn an individual selection to the NCAA Division III championships, and the first since Patrick Donovan in 2006. The Blue Jays also qualified for nationals as a team in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2004.
All seven Blue Jay runners finished 80th or better in the field of 314 competitors.
Chris Heisey placed 47th in a time of 26:29.5,
Colby Miller took 50th place in 26:32.7 followed by
Charlie Larsen in 51st place in 26:33.0.
Russell Speiden was 72nd with a time of 26:51.6, and
Myles Lund rounded out the Blue Jay contingent in 80th place in 27:00.3.
Allegheny College won the team championship by placing all five of its scoring runners in the top 25, amassing 59 points to finish ahead of runner-up Carnegie Mellon University (69 points). Both Allegheny and Carnegie Mellon earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division III championship.
Haverford College finished third with 83 points followed by Dickinson College (90 points) and Elizabethtown (175 points). Rounding out the top 10 were Susquehanna University (201 points), Johns Hopkins University (216 points), Gettysburg College (220 points), DeSales University (361 points) and Grove City College (363 points).
Elizabethtown, which entered the meet ranked fifth in the Mideast Region and 31st overall in Division III, finished in the top five at the regional championships for the ninth time in program history and the second consecutive year.
Chris Marker of Allegheny was the individual champion with a time of 24:54.3 over the 8,000-meter course, followed by teammate Jeramie Parker in 25:00.3 and Matt Jacob of Carnegie Mellon in 25:09.2. Reichert finished fourth, with Garrett Cichowitz of Grove City close behind in fifth with a time of 25:13.3.
