WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Will Kelly scored 20 of his season-high 28 points in the second half to lead Lycoming College to an 89-74 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action Wednesday night at Lamade Gymnasium.
The Warriors (14-2 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth) earned their seventh straight victory and remained tied for first place in the conference standings with Albright College, which defeated Arcadia University 86-63. The Blue Jays (11-5 overall, 3-3 Commonwealth) fell into a tie for fourth place with Messiah College, after the Falcons edged Lebanon Valley College 65-63.
Joe Flanagan led the Blue Jays with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while
Mike Church posted his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. However, the Blue Jays committed 24 turnovers which led to 32 points from the Warriors.
Kelly, who also pulled eight rebounds, shot 9-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line, and hit all six of his foul shots for the Warriors, who went 12-for-24 from three-point range for the game including 6-for-9 in the second half. Four players reached double figures for Lycoming, as Johnathan Williams added 13 points off the bench while Eric Anthony and Mike Bradley tallied 12 points apiece.
Keith Fogel also hit double figures for the Blue Jays, scoring 15 points while dishing out a team-high four assists. As a team, the Blue Jays shot 43.3 percent (26-for-60) from the field and hit 7-of-18 from three-point range on the evening.
Despite shooting 34.2 percent, Lycoming led 37-31 at halftime as Kelly paced the Warriors with eight points. Flanagan led the Blue Jays with 11 points in the first half with Fogel adding nine points.
Elizabethtown opened the second half with a 10-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from
Chris Jones with 17:54 left that gave the Blue Jays a 41-39 lead. The Blue Jays took their final lead of the night at 48-47 following a basket from Flanagan with 15:00 to play, but Anthony responded with a three-pointer on the Warriors' next possession to give them the lead for good.
Williams helped the Warriors to a 14-point lead by scoring seven straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers that extended the Lycoming advantage to 72-58 with 8:54 left. Elizabethtown trimmed the deficit to 72-67 with nine straight points, including a three-pointer by Fogel with 5:48 left, but went without a field goal until eight seconds remained as the Warriors closed with a 17-7 run.
Lycoming finished with a 45-40 advantage in rebounding, as Bradley led the Warriors with nine boards and Ishaan Davis grabbed eight rebounds to go with nine points in 24 minutes off the bench. Jerald Williams dished out a game-high 10 assists and made six steals for the Warriors, despite going without a field goal in 32 minutes of action.
Jones, making his third straight start in the place of injured
Kyle McConnell, finished with six points and a career-high six rebounds in 18 minutes of action for the Blue Jays.
