WHEATON, Ill. --- Elizabethtown College finished 17th out of 30 teams at the Pete Willson-Wheaton College Invitational, which concluded Saturday at King Arena.
The Blue Jays finished with 38.5 points during the two-day tournament and had a pair of placewinners, as
Bill Meaney finished fourth at 197 pounds and
Will Bentley took seventh at 125 pounds.
Meaney, ranked 10th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association at 197 pounds, advanced to the semifinals with wins over John Poppie of Wisconsin-La Crosse (12-8) and Brad Zellner of Wisconsin-Platteville (7-4), but fell to third-ranked Troy Carlson of the University of Chicago 13-6 in the semifinals. Meaney defeated Poppie 7-6 in the consolation semifinals, but took a medical forfeit in the third-place match against Adam Latella of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Bentley earned a 17-6 major decision over Alex Filer of Manchester College in his opening bout, but lost 3-0 to Alex Johns of the University of Indianapolis in the quarterfinals. Bentley came back in consolations to pick up a 10-2 major decision against Jonathon Bernstein of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a win by default against Justin Fleeson of Olivet College. Bentley was pinned in 1:42 by Riki Reynolds of Mount Union College in the fourth round of consolations, but pinned Allen Fish of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2:09 to capture seventh place.
Wisconsin-Parkside placed seven wrestlers in finals and won the team championship with 175.5 points, followed by Heidelberg College (108.5 points) and Wisconsin-La Crosse (92 points).
