ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team will be in action Sunday at the Metropolitan Conference championships, hosted by The College of New Jersey. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with finals in 10 weight classes scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Admission for the event is $7 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. The 10 weight-class champions will automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, while the coaches of the nine teams will select three wild-card qualifiers.
The Blue Jays finished sixth at last year's championship meet, with
Tyler Erdman claiming the conference title at 125 pounds and
Deron Sharp winning the crown at 285 pounds. In 2008, the Blue Jays finished tied for seventh in their inaugural year in the conference.
Erdman, who went on to earn All-America honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA championships last season, is the top seed at 125 after finishing with a 19-1 record during the 2009-10 season. Erdman won by fall in 13 of his 19 victories, including four pins and nine technical falls, and is 52-7 in his two-year career.
At 133 pounds,
Will Bentley moves up after wrestling at 125 for the entire season and compiling a 20-6 record including five pins and four major decisions.
Eric Rhoads brings a 17-9 record into action at 141 pounds while
Tye Boyer is seeded second at 149 pounds after going 15-6 overall and 12-4 at 149 in his rookie season.
Bud Croswell is entered at 157 pounds after finishing with a 6-4 record in limited action this season, while
Mike Lussier gets the nod at 165 pounds with a 9-6 record that includes three pins, two major decisions and a technical fall.
Jim Gentile is seeded third at 174 pounds with a 13-6 overall record and a 10-6 mark at 174, and at 184 pounds
Paul Connor will take to the mat with a 7-9 overall mark.
Bill Meaney is seeded third at 197 pounds after going 20-7 during the season and earning his first career national ranking., and at heavyweight
Mike Daub carries a 5-4 record which includes a pin and two major decisions.
The Blue Jays finished 8-5 overall during the 2009-10 season, including a 3-2 mark against conference opponents. Three of the Blue Jays' five losses came to nationally-ranked opponents, with a fourth to Division II Kutztown University. Elizabethtown also claimed the team title in the season-opening Messiah Invitational.
