FORT PIERCE, Fla. --- Elizabethtown College wrapped up its seven-game Florida trip with a doubleheader sweep of Ursinus College Thursday morning, winning the opener 12-4 and taking the nightcap 6-3.
In game one, the Blue Jays scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning as
Brian Kiernan drove in five runs with a two-run homer and a three-run double, and
Anthony Heaps added a pair of solo homers as part of an 18-hit attack.
Ben Yeager and
Steve Motika each went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Blue Jays, and
Rodney Francis scored three times as the Blue Jays led 11-2 after three innings.
Andrew Gordon finished 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Elizabethtown, as all nine starters finished with at least one hit in the game.
The first inning saw the Blue Jays send 13 batters to the plate and score nine runs on eight hits and two walks. Kiernan opened the scoring with a two-run home run, followed by a solo blast from Heaps that gave Elizabethtown a 3-0 lead. The Blue Jay lead grew to 6-0 on RBI singles by
Steve Shuleski and
Matt Vinagro along with an RBI double by Francis. Kiernan capped the scoring with a three-run double to expand the Elizabethtown lead to 9-0.
Heaps added a solo homer to lead off the second inning and give the Blue Jays a 10-0 lead, before the Bears got on the board in the third on a two-run single by Mike Schwager. The Blue Jays tacked on single runs on an RBI double by Gordon in the third and an RBI single by Motika in the fifth to go ahead 12-2, and Ursinus closed the scoring in the seventh on a two-run triple from Taylor Wieczerack.
Greg Katz (2-0) threw 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for the Blue Jays, striking out five and allowing one hit, while Allen Weaver took the loss for the Bears after surrendering all nine first-inning runs.
In game two, the Blue Jays (4-3 overall) scored four runs in the top of the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit, and Vinagro worked in and out of trouble through five innings to earn the win. Kiernan and
Dillon Tagle each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Elizabethtown, while Rob Vogt, Tommy Clark and Joel Ackerman all went 2-for-4 for Ursinus (4-5 overall).
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Vogt, but the Blue Jays responded with four runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Yeager, a bases-loaded walk by
Pat Mulligan and a two-run single by Francis.
Ursinus threatened in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on three straight singles, but Vinagro struck out the next two hitters and induced a force out to escape the threat. The Bears did strike for two runs in the fifth on a pair of errors, but the Blue Jays tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by Kiernan and a run-scoring double by Tagle.
Vinagro (1-0) scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings to earn the win, striking out seven and issuing no walks.
Adam Hartzell struck out two in a pair of hitless innings to pick up the save for the Blue Jays, while Steve Christakos was charged with the loss for Ursinus after giving up five hits and four earned runs in four innings.
