HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Host Hampden-Sydney College picked up a 13-6 victory over Elizabethtown College in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Saturday afternoon.
Micah Keller scored a game-high four goals and added an assist while Ben Clarke and Nate Cundy each scored a pair of goals for the Tigers (4-2 overall), who led 4-1 after one quarter and 7-2 at halftime against the Blue Jays (1-2 overall).
Cory Boushell scored three goals to lead Elizabethtown, while
Aaron Weber added two goals and two assists to increase his career point total to 198, leaving him two shy of becoming the first player in program history to record 200 career points.
The Tigers needed just 10 seconds to open the scoring as Brad Mostowy won the opening faceoff, controlled the ground ball and fired home the game's initial goal. Kyle Jett gave Hampden-Sydney a 2-0 lead midway through the quarter before
Jon Day put the Blue Jays on the board on their first shot of the game with 2:16 left in the period.
Hampden-Sydney scored the final two goals of the first quarter, including one from Keller with one second remaining, and added the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead with 9:10 left in the first half. Boushell and Keller exchanged goals in the latter minutes of the half as the Tigers led 7-2 at halftime.
The Tigers poured on the offense in the third quarter, scoring five times while the Blue Jays received goals from Weber and Boushell to head to the final period trailing 12-4. Weber and Boushell scored in the fourth quarter for Elizabethtown, while Clarke netted a man-up goal for Hampden-Sydney.
Hampden-Sydney finished with a 37-18 advantage in shots and won 14-of-21 faceoffs in the contest. Both teams picked up 33 ground balls, and the Tigers went 1-for-3 with the man advantage while the Blue Jays were scoreless in two opportunities.
Individually,
Brent Campbell led the Blue Jays with five ground balls while Boushell added four ground balls and
Mike Kenneally added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers for the Blue Jays. Carter Mavromatis paced the Tigers with four ground balls in addition to dishing out three assists.
Brendan Corcoran played 60 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays and made 12 saves, while the Tigers used three goalies as starter Mark Bagby (40 minutes, 1 save) yielded to Austin Black (9 minutes, 1 save) and Cody Hornung (11 minutes, 3 saves).
