ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Joey Couch allowed a run on five hits in seven innings and Rick Shumway went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run as York College defeated Elizabethtown College 6-1 in non-conference baseball action at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans (5-6 overall) finished with 12 hits as a team in the game, as Matt Monti finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Blue Jays (4-4 overall) were led by
Steve Motika who went 2-for-3 and
Rodney Francis who finished 2-for-4.
York opened the scoring in the top of the first inning off Blue Jay starter
Rob Cressman (1-1) on an RBI groundout by Mike Connolly, and extended the lead to 2-0 in the third as Shumway hit his first home run of the season.
The Spartans expanded their lead to 5-0 in the seventh on an RBI single by Monti, a run-scoring double from Jim Meehan and a sacrifice fly by Dustin Worthman. Elizabethtown scored its lone run of the day in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring groundout by
Anthony Heaps to pull within 5-1, but York tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Meehan.
Couch (1-0) struck out four and did not walk a batter in his seven-inning stint, with Chris Frankenfield and Brandon Ullom each following with a scoreless frame. Cressman gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in six-plus innings of work, striking out two and issuing one walk.
