ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Gettysburg College 3-2 in the first game of their non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, while the second game was called after seven innings due to darkness with the score tied 6-6.
The Blue Jays (5-2-1 overall) won the opener on a walkoff RBI single by
Lindsey Cooper in the bottom of the seventh inning, and knotted the nightcap as
Heather Peluso doubled to the base of the fence in left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to drive home
Paige Tanner with the tying run.
In game one, the teams played a scoreless contest until the bottom of the fifth, when the Blue Jays struck for two runs as Tanner singled home the first run and Peluso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the second run.
The Bullets responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2 on a two-run double by Catrina DelGais, but the Blue Jays won the game in the last of the seventh as Peluso doubled with two outs and came home on Cooper's winning hit.
Courtney Comstock went 2-for-4 in game two
Julie Sebastian (4-0) allowed eight hits and two earned runs in a complete-game performance for the Blue Jays, striking out one and issuing no walks, while Beth McCullough (2-3) took the loss for Gettysburg after yielding nine hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts, but three hit batsmen.
Peluso went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Elizabethtown in game one, while Sarah Woodbury and Kara Kempski each finished 2-for-3 for Gettysburg.
In game two, the Blue Jays again went on top 2-0, scoring single runs in each of the first two innings. Tanner tripled with two outs in the first and scored on a single by Sebastian to give Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead, and
Courtney Comstock doubled home a run in the second for a 2-0 advantage.
Held to four hits in five innings by Blue Jay starter
Emily Vogel, the Bullets (5-4-1 overall) struck for six runs on seven hits in the sixth to go on top 6-2. McCullough had a two-run pinch-hit single to break a 2-2 tie, while Caitlin Bay and Megan Lott followed with run-scoring hits to give the Bullets what seemed to be insurance.
The Blue Jays fought back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, as Sebastian and Peluso hit back-to-back doubles to trim the deficit to 6-3.
Elly McCarthy followed with a long home run to left field to bring the Blue Jays within 6-5 and chase Bullet starter Lanie Parr.
After retiring the side in the sixth, Gettysburg reliever Taylor Snyder recorded the first out in the seventh but walked Tanner on four pitches. Tanner moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a groundout, when with two outs and in semi-darkness Peluso drove a 1-1 pitch to the fence in left to knock home Tanner with the tying run. McCarthy grounded out to end the frame, and the game was called at that point.
Gettysburg finished with 11 hits in the second game, as Lott went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Adrienne Rahs joined Bay with two hits in the contest. Comstock, who left the opener after being spiked on a play at the plate in the first inning, returned to action and went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays in game two, while Sebastian and Peluso also went 2-for-4 for Elizabethtown.
Vogel allowed six runs (five earned) and struck out two while allowing eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work for the Blue Jays, while Parr, who pitched for Elizabethtown in 2009, went five-plus innings and gave up seven hits and five earned runs while striking out five for the Bullets.
