ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College has three entries in the 2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
2009 All-American
Tyler Erdman will compete at 125 pounds,
Tye Boyer will be in action at 149 pounds and
Bill Meaney will wrestle at 197 pounds for the Blue Jays, who finished third at the Metropolitan Conference championships.
Action gets underway Friday at noon Eastern time with first and second-round matches, and continues at 7:00 p.m. with championship quarterfinals and consolation second and third-round matches. On Saturday, wrestling continues with championship semifinals and consolation bouts at 11:00 a.m., with finals starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Saturday night.
Erdman is seeded third at 125 pounds after compiling a 22-1 overall mark and winning his second straight Metropolitan Conference championship. He finished seventh at 125 pounds last season to become Elizabethtown's first All-American since Justin Barbush in 1996. Erdman's 22 victories include four pins, 11 technical falls and three major decisions, and helped boost his career record to 55-7.
Erdman will open tournament action against George Gogonas of Augustana College (25-11) on Friday with a potential second-round bout against sixth-seeded Tyler Marlow of SUNY Brockport, who handed Erdman his only loss of the season Dec. 5 at York College. Since then, Erdman is 11-0 and has earned bonus points in 10 of his victories (two pins, six technical falls, two major decisions).
Boyer carries an 18-6 overall record into nationals after claiming the Metropolitan Conference championship at 149 pounds in his rookie season. He posted three pins, four technical falls and three major decisions during the season, including two pins during his run to the Metropolitan championship.
Boyer will wrestle one of two first-round bouts at 149 pounds against third-seeded Jason Pyle of Luther College (24-4). The winner will face Charlie Curran of Elmhurst College (30-6) in the second round.
Meaney (23-8) grabbed one of three wild-card berths available to the Metropolitan Conference after finishing as runner-up at 197 pounds to Zach Pizarro of Wilkes University. He earned five major decisions, two pins and a technical fall among his 23 victories, and brings a 42-30 career record into action at nationals.
Meaney will face Rob Kramer of tournament co-host Coe College (29-7) in the first round at 197 pounds, followed by either a second-round match or a consolation round bout against Brian Broll of Buena Vista University (30-11) or second-seeded Ryan Malo of Williams College (43-4).
