CLERMONT, Fla. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Muhlenberg College 7-0 and lost 10-2 in six innings to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on day two of the National Training Center Spring Games Monday afternoon.
Against Muhlenberg,
Julie Sebastian tossed an eight-hitter for her third career shutout while
Heather Peluso hit her third home run in three games, a three-run shot as part of a four-run third inning.
Elizabethtown jumped on the board in the third inning as
Courtney Comstock led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. With two outs, Sebastian reached on an error as Comstock scored with the game's first run. After a walk to
Sarah Church, Peluso drove a pitch from Muhlenberg's Alyssa Bruckner over the centerfield fence to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs in the third, as a two-out error plated Comstock and helped prolong the inning for Elizabethtown. Church followed two batters later with a two-run double to push the Blue Jays ahead 7-0.
Peluso finished 2-for-3 for the Blue Jays, while Comstock scored a pair of runs for Elizabethtown. Alyssa Epstein was the top performer at the plate for the Mules, going 3-for-3.
Sebastian (2-0) struck out four and issued one walk, while Bruckner (0-2) fanned two and walked a pair while allowing no earned runs.
Against RPI, the Engineers (1-4 overall) scored 10 unanswered runs after the Blue Jays (2-2 overall) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-run single by Church. RPI scored once in the third and added two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Gillian McCarthy finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Caitlin McGivern went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jen Bach also went 2-for-4 at the plate as part of a 13-hit attack for the Engineers, while Felicia Bua tossed five innings and allowed two runs on three hits to earn the win.
Church went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for the Blue Jays, while
Lindsey Cooper added two hits in three at-bats.
Emily Vogel (0-2) took the loss for Elizabethtown after giving up six hits and three runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.
