CHESTER, Pa. --- Widener University swept Elizabethtown College in a Commonwealth Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, capturing game one 5-1 and taking the nightcap by a score of 4-2.
In game one, Steph Connolly and Astyn DiNorscia each went 2-for-3 for the Pride and Kim Dougherty threw a four-hitter, while in game two Connolly finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and Widener broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
With the sweep, the Pride (24-13 overall, 6-6 Commonwealth) move into a three-way tie for third place in the Commonwealth Conference with the Blue Jays (17-10-1 overall, 6-6 Commonwealth) and Alvernia University with one doubleheader remaining for each team and two playoff spots available.
In the opener, the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by
Paige Tanner, but Widener came back with two runs in the second as Jamie Schmucker picked up a two-out, two-run single.
The Pride extended their lead to 5-1 in the third with three more two-out runs, coming on a double by Connolly and a two-run single by DiNorscia.
Dougherty (9-5) took care of the rest for Widener, retiring the final 16 batters she faced after giving up four hits to the first nine batters she faced. She struck out three and did not issue a walk in the win, while
Julie Sebastian (9-5) gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings to take the loss for Elizabethtown.
Game two saw the Pride jump to a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Kelsey Shultz, and add a run in the fourth as Caitlin Callahan singled home a run. The Blue Jays knotted the game in the fifth on RBI singles by
Whitney Breneman and Tanner, but Widener went ahead for good in the bottom of the frame on an error and a groundout.
Elizabethtown rallied in the seventh as Comstock and Breneman hit back-to-back singles with one out and moved up on a groundout, but a fly ball to left ended the game.
Breneman finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in game two for the Blue Jays, the only player to pick up more than one hit for Elizabethtown in the contest. Connolly was 3-for-3 in game two while Shultz and DiNorscia each finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Shultz (8-7) also earned the win for the Pride, allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts, while
Emily Vogel (8-5) took the loss for the Blue Jays after yielding four runs (two earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
