ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A three-set win by
Bryan Metz at flight four singles was the difference in Elizabethtown College's 5-4 non-conference men's tennis win over Muhlenberg College Tuesday afternoon.
Metz rallied from a set down and needed a second-set tiebreaker to earn a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Matt Kral and give the Blue Jays (12-4 overall) the victory over the Mules (5-9 overall) in a match that lasted 3 hours, 35 minutes and featured four tiebreakers and four three-set matches.
Elizabethtown led 2-1 after doubles play, and went ahead 3-1 as
Brok Walker defeated Yoni Farber 6-1, 6-0 at flight three. The Mules tied the match 3-3 with wins at flight six and flight five, but
Josh Riehl also rallied for a win at flight two over Robbie Goldwein by a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 score to push the Blue Jays back ahead 4-3.
A win by Muhlenberg at flight one tied the match while Metz led 3-2 in the third set, but he was able to win three of the final four games to secure the victory for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays received doubles wins from
Manrique Arrea and Riehl at flight one by an 8-4 score over Jordan Rutt and Goldwein, along with Walker and Metz at flight two by an 8-6 margin over Kral and Wayne Mitchel.
