HERSHEY, Pa. --- Skidmore College holds a three-stroke lead over Franklin & Marshall College following Tuesday's opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, being played at the Hershey Country Club East Course and the Hershey Links.
Playing at the Hershey Links, the Thoroughbreds shot 295 as a team in less-than-ideal weather conditions. Action was delayed 80 minutes at the start due to frost on the course, and temperatures failed to reach 50 degrees as a steady rain began shortly after noon.
The Diplomats were unaffected by the weather as they were the first team to tackle the Hershey Links at 8:20 a.m. Franklin & Marshall shot 298 and was led by a 71 from Jeremy Rubin, which placed him in second place behind Tain Lee from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, who carded a 69 at the Hershey Country Club East Course to lead after one round.
Otterbein College is in third place at 300, followed by Greensboro College (301) and Guilford College (303). Defending champion Oglethorpe University is in a tie for eighth place with the University of Texas-Tyler at 307, while top-ranked Methodist University shot 307 as a team and is in 12th place.
Besides Lee and Rubin, the only other golfers to shoot even par were Andrew Townsend of Central College, Brendan Singleton of Skidmore and Scott Pugh of Oglethorpe, each of whom shot 72 at the Hershey Links.
In Wednesday's second round, the teams will play on the opposite course from which they played on Tuesday. The top 23 teams plus the top five individuals not on one of those teams will make the cut and complete the final two rounds at the Hershey Links Thursday and Friday.
