ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Two first-year Elizabethtown College softball players have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Team, the NFCA announced Thursday. Infielder
Elly McCarthy was a first-team selection as a utility player, while catcher
Courtney Comstock was an at-large selection to the third team.
The Blue Jays finished 18-13-1 overall and in fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference for head coach
Kathy Staib, the first winning record for the program since 2003.
McCarthy is the first Blue Jay to be named first-team All-Region since Kelli Thon in 2006, despite being overlooked for a spot on the All-Commonwealth Conference team due to the lack of a utility position on the squad. She started 10 games at first base, 14 games at third base, two games at shortstop and three game as the designated player en route to hitting .333 and leading the team with nine home runs and 30 runs batted in.
McCarthy had 20 extra-base hits among her 30 hits, and her .767 slugging percentage ranks third in the Commonwealth Conference. She tied the program single-season record of nine home runs set by Lori Lobb in 1988, while her 30 runs batted in rank fourth on the single-season list. In the field, McCarthy did not make an error in 94 chances at first base and finished with just three errors in 46 chances at third base.
Comstock started all 32 games out of the leadoff spot for the Blue Jays, and hit .377 with nine doubles and 19 runs batted in, while leading the team with 32 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. Comstock had 12 multiple-hit games and struck out just four times in 106 at-bats, while her 32 runs scored rank fourth on the program's single-season list.
