GRANVILLE, Ohio --- Johns Hopkins University defeated Elizabethtown College 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament Thursday afternoon at Denison University.
Johns Hopkins (16-8 overall), ranked 15th in Division III, did not drop a set in advancing to Friday's second-round match against DePauw University. Elizabethtown (15-5 overall) was making its second appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last three seasons.
In doubles, Johns Hopkins opened with an 8-0 win by Ellen Berlinghof and Candace Wu at flight three over
Alena Marani and
Kristi Noecker. Anita Bhamidipati and Carolyn Warren followed with an 8-3 win at flight one over
Emily Swarr and
Jess Russell, and Courtney Boger and Nandita Krishnan wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 win at flight two over
Allison Burkhardt and
Madison Pipkin.
In singles play, Warren defeated Swarr 6-0, 6-1 at flight one and Wu downed Noecker 6-1, 6-0 at flight five to clinch the match for Johns Hopkins.
Swarr finished her career with 46 career singles wins to rank sixth on the program's all-time list, and 62 doubles victories to rank second all-time at Elizabethtown. Her 108 combined victories are tied for fourth in program history.
Russell closed her career with 99 combined singles and doubles wins to rank sixth all-time at Elizabethtown, with her 57 doubles wins placing her in a tie for third all-time and her 42 singles victories ranking seventh.
