HERSHEY, Pa. --- Methodist University earned its 10th NCAA Division III Men's Golf championship in dramatic fashion, as Josh Schrader sank the winning putt on the 18th green for a one-stroke victory over Guilford College in a rain-delayed final round Friday at Hershey Links.
Methodist finished with a team total of 1177 in the four days of competition (307-290-287-293), while Guilford finished at 1178 (303-297-295-283) and Huntingdon College took third at 1181 (309-290-290-292).
Tain Lee won the Arnold Palmer Award as the tournament medalist
Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College finished off a wire-to-wire victory in the individual standings with a round of 70 Friday, ending the tournament at seven-under-par 280 (69-69-72-70) for a three-stroke win over Mitchell Fedorka of the University of La Verne.
Action was delayed one hour, 40 minutes by a thunderstorm with the top three teams still having three players on the course and Methodist holding a two-shot lead over Guilford. When play resumed, the Monarchs' Josh Speight birdied 18 while the Quakers' Dusty Roberts parred the hole to give Methodist a three-stroke lead.
Guilford got the stroke back in the next group, as Brian Creghan finished off a birdie put while Methodist received a par from Trey Howell.
In the final group, Schrader layed up short of the green with his second shot, but his third shot was mis-hit and landed in the bunker, and his fourth shot found the rough short of the green. Meanwhile, Guilford's Peter Latimer was on the green in two and had an eagle putt for the win, but his shot went six feet past the hole.
Josh Schrader sinks the winning putt
Schrader chipped just past the hole and left himself an four-footer for bogey, which would only force a tie if Latimer was able to make the birdie putt. However, Latimer's putt was six inches wide of the cup, and his tap-in for par opened the window for Schrader, who drilled his putt to give the Monarchs the title.
Despite the heartbreaking second-place finish, Guilford turned in the low round of the tournament Friday with a 283, making up 10 shots of the 11-stroke deficit they faced entering the final round.
Fedorka and Chris Morris of Centre College had the low individual rounds Friday, each carding five-under-par 67. Morris finished in third place with a four-day score of 284, while Schrader was fourth at 287 and Latimer tied with Chase Blaich of Huntingdon for fifth place at 289.
Lee was presented the Arnold Palmer Award as the tournament's medalist, while St. John University's Mark Giorgi received the Phil Mickelson Award as the top-finishing freshman after tying for 13th in the final standings.
