LANCASTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a 19-16 loss to the University of Mary Washington Saturday at Franklin & Marshall College.

The Blue Jays (16-5 overall) faced early deficits of 3-0 and 7-2, and were unable to overcome the early onslaught by the 19th-ranked Eagles (14-5 overall), who will face the host Diplomats in a quarterfinal game Sunday afternoon.

Megan Byrnes led Elizabethtown with five goals and an assist, while fellow senior Stephanie Kreis added two goals and three assists and Katie Caprinolo contributed four goals in her final career game.

Catherine Kennedy and Lauren Callison each finished with four goals and an assist for Mary Washington, while Allie Kimmelman keyed the Eagle offense with a goal and seven assists.

Mary Washington jumped to a 3-0 lead after seven minutes on goals by Brittany Butler, Callison and Erin Murphy. Elizabethtown quickly cut the deficit to 3-2 as Byrnes scored twice off assists from Kreis, but Kennedy scored twice and Callison and Keller Torrey scored as part of a 4-0 run that gave the Eagles a 7-2 lead with 11:35 left in the first half.

Caprinolo scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes sandwiched around a pair of Eagle tallies as the Blue Jays went to intermission trailing 9-4. Mary Washington led 11-5 with 26:26 to play, only to see Elizabethtown run off three straight goals from Katelyn Slade, Becky Porter and Kreis to halve the deficit to 11-8 with 23:54 left.

An exchange of goals from Callison and Katie Schuerich kept the Eagle lead at three (12-9) with 20:40 left, but Mary Washington would go on a four-goal run over the next four minutes to build its largest lead of the day at 16-9 with 16:52 left.

The Eagles were on top 19-12 with 4:09 remaining, but the Blue Jays refused to quit as Cullinan and Caprinolo scored goals followed by a pair from Byrnes to bring Elizabethtown with 19-16 in the final minute.

The high-scoring contest was reflected in the 35-34 shot advantage by Mary Washington. The Eagles also held a 29-25 lead in ground balls, and finished with 22 ground balls to 15 by the Blue Jays.

Individually, Alexis Morris led the Blue Jays with six draw controls while Cullinan had seven ground b alls and Morris added four. Jenny Atmar finished with five caused turnovers, six ground balls and eight draw controls to pace the Eagles, while Ellen Bikowski had five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
