EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College competed at the Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Individual Tournament Saturday and Sunday, advancing seven of its nine entries to the semifinal round.
Manrique Arrea was the lone Blue Jay to compete in a final, falling in a 10-4 super tiebreaker to Messiah College's Jansen Hein at flight one singles. Arrea won the second set 7-6 (7-4) after dropping the opening set 6-3 to Hein.
Arrea advanced to the finals with wins over Ethan Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley College (6-3, 6-2), Joe Li of FDU-Florham (6-2, 6-3) and Cesar Leon of Wilkes University (6-4, 2-6, 10-7 tiebreaker).
In other singles action,
Brok Walker (flight three),
Eric Fritzges (flight five) and
Brian Osborn (flight six) all advanced to the semifinal round, with Walker and Fritzges being eliminated by the eventual flight champion.
Walker defeated Christopher Finney of Arcadia University (6-0, 6-2) and Trevor Miles of FDU-Florham (6-3, 6-1) before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Jeremy Nolt of Wilkes. Fritzges downed Adam Sheir of Messiah (7-5, 6-1) and Josh Hall of Eastern University (6-1, 6-3) before being ousted by Andres Rivera of Manhattanville College (4-6, 7-5, 10-3 tiebreaker). Osborn dropped Joe Monzo of Albright College (6-2, 6-0) and Pedro Leal of Arcadia (6-4, 7-5) then fell 7-5, 6-2 to Clarke Freeman of Wilkes in the semifinals.
In other singles play,
Bryan Metz competed at flight four and won 6-3, 6-0 over DeSales' Joe Sulpizio in the opening round but lost 6-2, 6-1 to Kevin Langner of Arcadia in the quarterfinals.
Josh Riehl received a first-round bye at flight two, then was upset 6-3, 6-4 by Fred Hockenbury of Misericordia University in the quarterfinals.
In doubles, all three Elizabethtown teams were knocked out in the semifinals by Manhattanville duos that went on to win their flight championships.
Arrea and Walker received a bye at flight one, then won 8-3 over Alex Beattie and Jason Mifsud of Lycoming College and lost 8-2 in the semifinals to Michael Capozzi and Julian Oribe of Manhattanville.
At flight two, Riehl and Fritzges knocked off the FDU-Florham team of Kevin Ly and Miles 8-0, then edged Bryan Arnett and Dan Wilson of Eastern 8-6 in the quarterfinals before dropping a 9-8 verdict (7-3 tiebreaker) to Lance Dorfi and Dean Tahir in the semifinals.
In flight three action, Metz and
Michael Anderson beat Brett Ford and Justin Muthler of Misericordia 8-2 in the first round and Nathan Bauer and William Gerber of Alvernia 8-4 in the semifinals, but lost to Karim Mahmoud and Rivera 8-4 in the semifinals.
