LANCASTER, Pa. --- Lycoming College overcame a 4-1 deficit to defeat Elizabethtown College 5-4 in the Commonwealth Conference men's tennis championship match Saturday afternoon at Racquet Club West.
The match was moved indoors due to the forecast of high winds, and the Blue Jays (13-5 overall) jumped out to the lead after winning two of three doubles matches and the first two singles contests. However, the Warriors (10-2 overall) posted three three-set wins to tie the match and closed out the championship with a 6-4, 6-3 victory by Cody Heffner at flight six.
Lycoming's Alex Beattie was named tournament Most Valuable Player after teaming with Jason Mifsud for an 8-5 win at flight one of doubles, then starting the Warrior comeback with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory at flight two of singles.
PIcking up singles wins for the Blue Jays were
Manrique Arrea at flight one by a 6-3, 6-2 score over Robert Brown, and
Eric Fritzges at flight five with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Phillip Shannon.
In doubles, Fritzges and
Josh Riehl defeated Robert and David Brown 8-5 at flight two, and
Bryan Metz and
Michael Anderson downed Shannon and Heffner 8-1 at flight three.
