ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College was eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference softball tournament with a 3-2 loss to Widener University Saturday morning at LVC Softball Park.
The Blue Jays (18-13-1 overall) trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning, but scored a pair of runs and had the tying run at second base when the game ended.
Kelsey Shultz (10-7) allowed nine hits and two runs but earned the win for the Pride (27-14 overall), who were eliminated 8-0 in five innings by Lebanon Valley in their next game. Messiah College won the championship with a 4-2 victory over the host Flying Dutchmen in the title contest.
Widener took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Kim Dougherty off Elizabethtown starter
Emily Vogel, and tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Kelly Vogelgesang and an RBI single by Jess Way.
Elizabethtown had runners on base in five of the first six innings against Shultz, but could not break through until the seventh. Elizabethtown loaded the bases with none out on a singles by
Julie Sebastian and
Whitney Breneman and a walk to
Shannon Marsico. An error allowed the Blue Jays' first run to score, while a fielder's choice off the bat of
Lindsey Cooper drove home the second run.
Sebastian went 2-for-3 for the Blue Jays, while
Courtney Comstock and
Sarah Church each finished 2-for-4. Dougherty and Steph Connolly paced the Pride by going 2-for-3 apiece.
Vogel (8-7) went 3 1/3 innings and gave up six hits and three runs, while Sebastian came on in the fourth and allowed two hits and struck out two in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
