ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College held its fourth annual Blue Jay Athletic Association Alumni Reunion on Saturday, May 15, featuring the induction of the 2010 Class of the Ira R. Herr Athletic Hall of Fame and the rededication of the Hall of Fame display in the Jay Walk.
This year's inductees were Justin M. Barbush '96, a member of the wrestling team from Manheim, Pa.; Brian L. Crouse '85, a member of the basketball team from Stevens, Pa.; Scott P. McNaney '90, a member of the baseball team from Alpharetta, Ga.; Heidi C. Metzger '95, a member of the basketball team from State College, Pa.; Sherilyn Adie Robinson '87, a member of the field hockey team from Mount Joy, Pa.; and Larry J. Shirk '75, a member of the soccer team from New Holland, Pa.
In addition, former women's soccer coach and NCAA faculty representative Ronald Shubert '62 of Elizabethtown received the Joseph A. Whitmore Outstanding Service to Student Athletes Award, and Steve Capoferri '90 of Lancaster was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. Earning the Distinguished Student-Athlete awards were Aaron Weber (men's lacrosse) and
Megan VanDenHengel (women's cross country).
Barbush was the second Blue Jay wrestler to be a two-time All-American, finishing third in 1995 and fourth in 1996. He was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference champion at 134 pounds, and ranks in the top 10 in career wins with 97. At the time of his induction, Barbush still holds the program single-season record for wins with 41 in 1994-95.
Crouse was a Middle Atlantic Conference Northwest League All-Star in both 1982-83 and 1983-84, and averaged in double figures all four seasons of his career while starting every game. Crouse was the 17th player in program history to score 1,000 points, and finished with 1,147 points in an Elizabethtown uniform.
Ron Shubert '62 and Steve Capoferri '90 received special awards
McNaney was a Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division All-Star in both 1986 and 1988, hitting .421 with eight triples and four home runs as a senior and subsequently being drafted in the 19th round by the Baltimore Orioles. McNaney also earned a letter as a goalkeeper on the soccer team in 1984.
Metzger was a four-year letterwinner and ranks third in program history with 1,674 career points. She averaged 22.3 points per game as a senior and continues to hold the program's career record with 191 three-pointers. At the time of her induction, Metzger also ranks in the program's all-time top 10 in scoring average, assists and steals.
Robinson lettered in both field hockey and softball, and was an All-Region honoree and a second-team Academic All-American in softball as a senior. At the time of her graduation, she was the field hockey program's all-time leader in assists with 27, and to this date she continues to hold the single-season record for assists with 16, set in 1986.
Shirk was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division All-Star, also earning PA-NJ-DE All-Star honors twice. During his career, the Blue Jays won one MAC championship and appeared in regional playoffs all four seasons.
Weber was named honorable mention Division III All-America as well as a Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, and was the Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Year. He led the MAC in points with 70 on the strength of 38 goals (third in
2010 Elizabethtown College Distinguished Student-Athlete nominees
the MAC) and 32 assists (second in the MAC), scored at least one goal in 15 of the Blue Jays' 16 games, and led the team with five game-winning goals.
For his career, Weber finished as the program's all-time leader in goals (143), assists (108) and points (251). He scored at least one point in 60 of his 61 career games, including the final 59 in a row, and holds or shares the program single-season records for goals, assists and points as well.
VanDenHengel was the Middle Atlantic Conference champion and finished 12th at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in the steeplechase in her first year competing in the event.
For her career, VanDenHengel was a two-time national qualifier in cross country, competing with her Blue Jay teammates in 2007 and finishing 101st out of 280 runners as an individual in 2009. She was also a 2010 provisional qualifier in the 10,000 meters, and earned the Middle Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award in cross country.
The rededicated Ira R. Herr Athletic Hall of Fame features vertical columns with past inductees listed by year of induction, along with an electronic kiosk display and mounted retired jerseys.
