OWINGS MILLS, Md. --- Caroline Carlin scored twice in a span of exactly two minutes midway through the second half as Sewanee University defeated Elizabethtown College 3-2 in the Black Eyed Susan Tournament at Stevenson University Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (1-0 overall) came back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to take the victory away from the Blue Jays (0-1 overall), who received goals from
Liz DeMatteis in the first half and
Julie Foster in the second half.
Elizabethtown dominated play for the first 23 minutes, taking the game's first four shots and cashing in at 11:03 as DeMatteis put home her first goal of the day. The Tigers finally mounted some pressure in the final 10 minutes of the half and knotted the score at 1-1 at 25:48 as Carly Grimm dodged two defenders and passed to Molly Kennedy who scored the equalizer.
In the second half, Foster scored following a penalty corner by
Caitlin Grimes to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead with 28:01 left. However, Carlin evened the score just over three minutes later on a putback and followed with the game-winner with 22:48 left off a pass from Anne Booke.
The Blue Jays held Sewanee without a shot the rest of the contest, but managed just three shots at the Tiger cage which were all stopped by keeper Emily Detmer, the last coming with 6:30 left.
Elizabethtown held a 13-8 advantage in shots in the match and a 7-3 edge in penalty corners, but Detmer finished with six saves in goal for Sewanee in the win.
