Frey named USILA Scholar All-American

2015 USILA Scholar All-Americans

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College defenseman Matt Frey was chosen as a Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Monday afternoon, becoming the third student-athlete in Blue Jay men's lacrosse history to receive the award.

Frey, who graduated with his bachelor of science in engineering (mechanical engineering concentration) Saturday, earned All-Landmark Conference First Team honors this season for the first time in his career, following up All-Commonwealth Conference Second Team selections in 2013 and 2014.

A native of West Grove, Pa., Frey established new career-highs with 41 caused turnovers with 41 and 64 ground balls as the Blue Jays went 14-3 and earned the No. 1 seed in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament. He finished the season tied for the Landmark lead in caused turnovers and sixth in ground balls. Frey surpassed Mike Kenneally '11 with his 100th career caused turnover, a new program record, in an April 25 victory at Drew. His 197 career ground balls rank seventh all-time at the College. Frey was 27th in Division III with 2.41 caused TOs per game.

Frey was a finalist for the Elizabethtown College Distinguished Male Student-Athlete Award and appeared on the Landmark Spring Academic Honor Roll. He's Elizabethtown's first USILA Scholar All-American since 2012, adding his name to an exclusive list that includes Aaron Weber (2010) and Brendan Corcoran (2012).

The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established in 1989 to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and cumulative GPA of 3.0. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.
