Blue Jays strong early, but fall late to No. 18 York (Pa.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown came out strong Tuesday evening in search of repeating its upset over a nationally-ranked York (Pa.) team the last time the Spartans visited Thompson Gymnasium, in 2013. John Archangelo's last second pin to start the match at 125 bumped the Blue Jays out to an early lead, but No. 18 York won the final six weight classes to take the match 26-12.

Archangelo set the tone in the night's first bout, scoring a takedown late in the first period against Laughman. He would add six more points in the middle period, escaping from a down start just 11 seconds and then getting his second takedown with 1:20 to go and a 3-point near-fall in the final five seconds. With riding time on his side, the E-town junior had four points for a major decision penciled in as the third period wound to a close. Archangelo would not settle, using a last second move to catch Laughman off guard and score the pin with just 0.4 remaining.

Elizabethtown (1-4) rode the momentum of Archangelo's win to victories in two of the next three bouts

Freshman Chris Kummerer, much like Archangelo, started quickly in his 141-pound match with Thomas Moss. Kummerer put Moss down less than 20 seconds into the first period and scored three more back points before the match was a minute old. The two opponents traded reversals with Kummerer holding a 7-2 lead after one. Moss answered back with all five points in the second to tighten the match, but it was Kummerer getting a reversal and takedown in the final two minutes to seal an 11-6 decision.

The Blue Jays weren't done putting a scare into the Spartans (9-2), who had already beaten two nationally-ranked opponents this season. Chad Lammer evened his dual record at 2-2 and improved to 35-25 in his career with a five-point third period to beat Drew Spector 6-3 at 149. Lammer was down 3-1 going into the third, but an escape and takedown flipped the score, 4-3, in his favor.

Lammer's match teetered on the edge in the late going with the Ephrata product on top of Spector. An escape by the York senior would have tied the bout at four and sent it to overtime. Instead, Lammer gutted out a late two-point near-fall to secure three team points and a 12-3 Blue Jay lead.

Sadly, it was York's night the rest of the way, as the visitors took the final six weights in securing a 26-12 victory.

Cory Rank ended Mike Lammer's four-match winning streak at 157 with a 5-2 decision and Mitchell Ramsey scored a fast pin (1:34) at 165 to tie the match at 12.

York hopped in front for the first time all night at 174 when Tyler Rhoads held off Zeke Zimmer, 7-3. The loss was Zimmer's first in a dual this season (5-1) and snapped a five-match unbeaten stream for the Bala Cynwyd native.

Nicholas Zak (184) and Troy Uhrin (285) sandwiched major decisions around a 4-0 decision from John Shorter at 197.

The Blue Jays will now have to wait until 2015 and a Jan. 7 match at Scranton to try and get back in the win column. The team will finish its pre-break portion of the schedule Saturday, Dec. 6, at the York New Standard Corporation Invitational.
