Chad Lammer, Fernandez go unbeaten, but Blue Jays come up empty at East/West Duals

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Elizabethtown wrestling went up against some of its top competition of the 2014-15 season Saturday at the East/West Duals hosted by Messiah. The Blue Jays fell to No. 27 Thiel late, 23-13, No. 23 Waynesburg, 35-11 and Washington & Jefferson, 25-19, to finish 0-3. Junior Chad Lammer went 3-0 at 141 pounds and sophomore Luke Fernandez was unbeaten at 184.

Freshman Chris Kummerer recorded a major decision at 149 pounds to give Elizabethtown wrestling an early 7-6 lead over No. 27 Thiel Saturday in the East/West Duals at Messiah College. The two teams were even with two matches left, but the Tomcats pulled out wins at 197 and 285 to defeat the Blue Jays 23-13.

Decisions by Vince Vahaly and Lance Waters at 125 and 133 put Thiel (7-4) ahead 6-0, but Elizabethtown clawed back into it with a 7-3 decision from Chad Lammer at 141 and Kummerer's 12-3 major decision against Jordan Smith at 149.

Kummerer jumped out to a 7-3 lead at the end of the first period and blanked Smith in the third, using a reversal and two-point near fall to outscore his opponent 4-0.

Elizabethtown was forced to come from behind again after the Tomcats received a decision from Chris Nuss at 157 and a major from Brandon Collins at 165. Zeke Zimmer and Luke Fernandez helped the Blue Jays do just that. Zimmer's match came down to the third period, but the senior held on for his 20th win of the season.

Zimmer was up 7-6 entering the third, but Thiel's Marco Crivelli escaped off the bottom to tie it at seven. Zimmer would get the decisive takedown, and though Crivelli escaped again, it wouldn't be enough to steal three points from the Blue Jays. Zimmer tacked on a point for riding time and a 10-8 decision.

Fernandez also saw his 184 match come down to the wire, but a three-point near fall was the difference in a 5-2 win over Jordan Powell.

Tied at 13, Thiel used a major decision from Jerrold Roosa at 197 and the only pin of the match from Jake Trillow at 285 to pull away for the victory.

Elizabethtown is set to face another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 23 Waynesburg, before finishing the day with a match against Washington & Jefferson.

No. 23 Waynesburg 35, Elizabethtown 11

Back-to-back pins to start the match paved the way for 23rd-ranked Waynesburg's 35-11 win over Elizabethtown.

125-pounder Gordan Bieber got a fall in the waning seconds of his match against John Archangelo (6:49) and that was followed quickly by Flippo Crivelli's 2:15 fall of Bryan Pflanz at 133.

The Blue Jays got on the board when Chad Lammer won his second match of the afternoon, a 9-4 decision over DJ Grindle.

The Yellow Jackets (14-6) would have the next three weights go their way, with bonus points from Landon Lohr (major decision) at 149 and Sam Guidi (pin) at 165 to grab a commanding 25-3 lead.

Zeke Zimmer and Luke Fernandez continued to wrestle strong, each picking up a major decision and moving to 2-0 on the day.

Zimmer did all of his damage early on, scoring two takedowns in the first period and a reversal and three-point nearfall in the second, to go in front 9-1 against Eric Tuck.

Fernandez surpassed his freshman win total with his 13th of the season in a 17-3 rout of Austin Davidson at 184. The sophomore from Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey put on a scoring display in the first, registering two takedowns and a pair of two-point near falls for an 8-1 lead. Fernandez wasn't done. He scored four points in each of the final two periods and finished with five takedowns in the match.

The Blue Jays had three different leads against the Presidents, but could not hold on in the end, falling to 0-3 in the East/West Duals.

Philip Torresani notched a big 13-2 major decision at 125 to start the match and Chad Lammer completed a 3-0 day at 141 with a 6-4 decision over Daniel Pommerer to give E-town a 7-6 lead.

Following a forfeit win for the Jays' Chris Kummerer at 149, Washington & Jefferson's Nick Carr, ranked No. 1 in the country, grabbed a 16-4 major decision over Mike Lammer at 157. Carr is the defending national runner-up at 165.

W&J would go in front a bout later, 14-13, when Declan Haggerty won by major decision at 165.

Luke Fernandez got the benefit of a forfeit at 184 to finish his day 3-0 and it put Elizabethtown back in front 19-18, but the Presidents scored the final seven points to take the match.

The Blue Jays are off next weekend before competing at the Wheaton (Ill.)-Pete Willson Invitational Jan. 30-31.
